UN R155 is on cyber security and UN R156 regulation on software update, applying to vehicles permitting software updates impacting the type approval (putting vehicle on the market).
Four subjects are involved over the vehicles lifecycle:
- Supplying tiers,
- original equipping manufacturer (OEM),
- technical services and,
- (governmental) approval authorities.
For type approval the OEM must demonstrate that
- a management system (SUMS) is in place,
- mechanism for ensuring integrity and authenticity of software updates,
- software package identifying numbers (RxSWIN) are protected, readable and verifiable from vehicle.
The software package identifying numbers (RxSWIN) stands for
- Regulation number x
- Software identification number
and points to a specific software configuration tag e.g. “RS5WIN 0001″ marks a software relate to the “Sealed-Beam” (regulation no 5) in revision “0001”.
The, may vehicle specific, RSxWIN tags must be
- available for all software functions which have impact on the type approval scope
- must be unique for any impacting software update
- readable from vehicle (the ID) and be provided to the type approving authorities & technical services (incl. all relevant documents) e.g., to the main inspection.
